Glossary and Acronyms

Ozone (O3)

A colorless gas with a sweet odor. It is a secondary pollutant formed when Volatile Organic Compounds and nitrogen oxides combine in the presence of sunlight. It is associated with smog or haze conditions. Although the ozone in the upper atmosphere protects the population from harmful ultraviolet rays, ground-level ozone from human and natural sources produces an unhealthy environment in which to live.
